Video Games and Consoles : Define

Definition: “Entertainment systems in which a computer is used to drive a video display and interact with players using a variety of input devices. Video games can be divided into arcade systems, home computers, and game consoles.” – from McGraw-Hill’s AccessScience Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Online

Arcade Games:

The Arcade Games, Ding Dong-in Indonesian

Arcade game is a machine that only can play just one specific game. In Indonesia we call it with  “ding dong”. Its very familiar in earlier 1990 in Indonesia. To play this game, we should insert a coin.

In 1971, Bill Pitts and Hugh Tuck developed the first coin-operated computer game, Galaxy Game, at Stanford University using a DEC PDP-11/20 computer; only one unit was ever built (although it was later adapted to run up to eight games at once). Two months after its installation, Computer Space by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney was released, which was the first coin-operated video game to be commercially sold (and the first widely available video game of any kind, predating the Odyssey by six months). Both games were variations on the vector display 1961 Spacewar, however Bushnell and Dabney’s used an actual video display by having an actual television set in the cabinet -http://www.gametrailers.com-.

Ding dong is a very big units which has everything what a game need : control system, display, hardware. Its very expensive and very heavy, so generally this unit is not for home using. Its most often found in local market, mall or around from public area.

Atari Pong, released in 1972 was the first popular game arcade. This populary followed by Space Invaders (1978), Pac-Man (1980), and Donkey Kong (1981). In earlier 1990 after arcade games saw a lull, appeared new game arcade that reviving industry of the game, such as Street Fighter II (1991), Mortal Kombat (1992), and King of Fighters (1994).

However, since 1996 arcade games have experienced a steady decline as the game console has become more sophisticated. According to an article in The Guardian, revenue generated from coin-operated video games (arcade games) has declined from 7.3 billion in 1982 to 866 million in 2004.

Console Games:

A console is a machine for playing many kind of games. Not like arcade, console usually not have display, so its need to be hooked up to a display (television). Its smaller and lighter then arcade, but its more powerfull.

In the journey, console divided into seven generation with variety of the brand and the games. Here they are :

  1. First Generation (1972-1977)
  2. Second Generation (1977-1983)
  3. Third Generation (1985-1989)
  4. Fourth Generation (1989-1996)
  5. Fifth Generation (1994-1999)
  6. Sixth Generation (1998-2005)
  7. Seventh Generation (since 2005)
